Insurers slide on earnings concern

Canadian stocks fell for a second day as the biggest insurance companies slid on concern that earnings reports this week will show lingering effects of the recession. Sun Life Financial decreased 1.8 per cent as the S&P/TSX composite index lost 0.3 per cent.

Natural gas producer declines as futures prices fall

Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. lost 2.5 per cent as natural gas prices fell for a second day. Gas for December delivery fell 4.4 per cent to settle at $4.824 (U.S.) per million British thermal units on forecasts for mild weather that would limit demand for the heating fuel.

S&P 500 rebounds as economic data top estimates

U.S. stocks rose, with the S&P 500 index rebounding from its biggest weekly drop since May, as Ford's profit and gauges of manufacturing, home sales and construction spending topped projections. The S&P 500 added 0.7 per cent, while the Dow was up 0.8 per cent.
