A small two-shopping-centre deal in Oregon could be the first step toward international expansion, say the leaders of Calloway Real Estate Investment Trust. The Toronto-based REIT announced a $10-million (U.S.) deal earlier this week that will give the retail landlord a toehold in the U.S. market. Calloway Real Estate Investment Trust is expanding into the U.S. market, buying two shopping centres in Portland, Ore., in a deal worth $10-million (U.S.). The properties, owned by Toronto-based SmartCentres, are under development and will represent an investment of $35-million when they are completed in 2010, the REIT said. SmartCentres is a privately held company owned by Calloway's largest shareholder, Mitchell Goldhar. The REIT said the properties will be managed out of SmartCentre's offices in Richmond, B.C.
