Help HomeWorking with Charts
Charts show the price and volume action of a particular fund, security or index over a
specified time period. The volume section of each chart displays the daily, weekly or
monthly trading volume for the particular security or for the component securities in the
index.
To begin using charts, select Charts from the Navigation Bar. The Fund Chart screen
appears. You can select any of the following by clicking the tabs at the top:
- Fund: Chart the performance of one or more selected
fund
- Stock: Chart the performance
of one or more selected stocks or indexes.
- Portfolio: Chart the performance of
your total portfolio, or any of its contents.
Fund Charts
Note: Charts are based on Adjusted Net Asset Value (NAV), and do not necessarily reflect the actual
price the fund was trading at on the dates shown.
- Option A: Enter a Fund Symbol
- If you know the symbol for the fund, enter it in
the Symbol box and click Go.
- If you don’t know the symbol, click Symbol
Lookup and locate the symbol(s) you need.
- Enter the Chart Type. You can choose
either
- Line Chart - A linear
representation of the fund's
performance over time.
- Bar Chart - A graphical
representation of the fund's
performance over time.
- Scatter Chart - Compares the risk-to-reward
relationship for this fund with the
selections you make in the Compare
with Index and Includes
options below. Risk is measured on the horizontal axis using Standard Deviation. Return is measured on the vertical axis using Average Annual Return.
The best place to be is in the upper
left quadrant; the worst is the
lower right.

- Peer Group Chart (see diagram at
right) - Compares the
fund's total return (excluding sales charges) for a given period with the range of returns for all
funds within the same asset class,
as well as a relevant market index.
The range of returns includes all
funds in the 5th and 95th percentiles (this eliminates the effects of outlying securities). For each time period, the
table beneath the graph provides the actual total return of the
fund and selected index, the total return at the 5th and 95th percentiles, the median total return, the number of funds within the
asset class, the absolute rank of the
fund, and the quartile into which the security falls (1=top 25%, 4=bottom 25%).
- Option B: Select a Fund Company
- Click the down-arrow beside the Company box, select the fund company from the drop-down
list, and click Find.
- From the Fund selection box that appears, select the fund you want and click Go.
- Option C: Enter a Fund Name
- In the Name box, enter part of the fund name and click Go. A new selection box appears,
containing all funds with that text in their name.
- Select the fund you want and click Go.
The selected chart appears. Depending on the chart type, you now have the following
options:
- Fund: Select a
new Fund to chart.
- Period: (Line,
scatter charts only) The default period for a chart is 3 years. You can select
any period from the inception of the fund to the past 3 months.
Note: For charts with a period of 3
years or more, only the month-end value is shown. For charts showing less
than 3 years, daily values are shown.
- Compare with index: (Line, Scatter charts only) Select an index from
the pulldown box with which to compare the fund's performance. Comparing a fund's
performance to an index, such as the TSE 300, allows you to assess how well the fund
manager is doing his/her job.
Note: Make sure that you choose the correct
index to compare against. For example, bond funds should be compared against
the Bond index, Canadian equities against the TSE 300, and U.S. equity funds
against the Dow Jones Industrial Average.
- Moving Averages: You can apply up to 3
moving averages to the
symbol in the Fund Symbol box.
Note: This option only works with
Line Charts, and cannot be
applied to intraday data.
- Compare with other Fund(s): (Line, Bar charts only) Enter up to 6
fund symbols in this box, separated by spaces, to chart the performance of all selected
funds on a single chart. If you don't know the symbols, click Symbol Lookup to find them.
- Includes: (Scatter chart only) Select one of
- All Funds: Compare the performance of this fund to all funds on record.
- Fund Family Members: Compare the performance of this fund to all other funds
for the same company
- Asset Class Members: Compare the performance of this fund to all members of the
same asset class.
- Only Selected Fund: Compare the performance of only this fund to the
selected index.
- Return Type: (Bar, scatter, peer
group charts only) Select either Yearly or
Total Return.
- New Chart: You can generate a new Line, Bar or Scatter chart based
on the same criteria. Note, however, that not all options are available for
all charts (see above).
- Print this page: Create and print a page containing only this
chart.
Creating Stock Charts
On this screen, you can create charts for stocks and indexes, including:
- Specify a time period (intraday to five years) and
frequency (daily, weekly and monthly).
- Compare price movements of up to three securities
- Add up to two moving averages -- which can be
useful when tracking whether a security or index is trending up or down.
The following options are available from the Stock Chart screen. Once you have made
your selections, click Go. When the chart appears, you can make new selections to
edit this chart or create a new one.
- Stock or Index Symbol: To generate a chart for a particular
stock or index, enter the symbol followed by a hyphen and an exchange code. Enter only one
symbol. If you don't specify an exchange code after entering a stock or index symbol, our
database will match the symbol with its primary exchange — usually the TSE in Canada
or the NYSE or NASDAQ in the United States. For example, if you enter BCE into the text
box and click "Chart," the system will return a chart for BCE-T (as traded on
the TSE and in Canadian dollars). The exchange codes are as follows: T-Toronto, M-Montreal,
X-Canadian Venture, D-CDN, N-New York, A-American, Q-NASDAQ,
-Q2 (NASDAQ-OTCBB), I-Index. If you don't know the symbols, click Symbol Lookup to find them.
- Period: Select a time period from intraday to 5
years. The words in brackets (daily, weekly or monthly) refer to the frequency
of the prices and trading volume that will be displayed on the chart: one
trading day, week or month. Daily, weekly or monthly also affect how
moving averages will be calculated: on a daily basis, or based on weekly and
monthly closing prices.
- Chart Style: Select one of
- Price Volume Chart: This Line Chart displays closing or intraday prices for
the current trading day up to five years. With the exception of intraday prices, price and
volume information will range from a period of one trading day to one month.
Note: You must use the Price Volume option to
generate a chart containing multiple securities or indexes, moving averages,
or intraday data.
- High-Low-Close Chart: The High-Low-Close chart shows the highest, lowest and
closing price for the security or index based on the selected frequency (daily, weekly or
monthly). The high-low-close values are shown by a vertical line intersected by a hyphen
(-). The highest point on the line shows the highest price for that period; the lowest
point shows the lowest; and the hyphen indicates the price level at which the security or
index closed for the period.
Note: The High-Low-Close option is only available when generating a chart
for a single security. This option is unavailable for charts containing multiple
securities or indexes, moving averages, or intraday data.
- Stock or Index Symbol for comparison (max. 2): To compare the
performance of the selected stock with up to 2 other stocks or indexes, type one or two
symbols with exchange codes, separated by spaces (e.g.,ibm-n msft-q); in this
box. If you don't know the symbols, click Symbol
Lookup to find them.
Note: Comparative chart results are based on the percentage price change
for the securities or indexes for the Time Period specified. All
percentage returns are calculated based on simple capital appreciation. Volume
numbers and moving averages are shown only for the original security or index,
not the ones selected for comparison.
- Moving Averages: You can apply up to 3 moving averages to the symbol(s) in the Stock or
Index Symbol box.
Note: This option only works with Price Volume Charts, and cannot be
applied to intraday data.
- First Moving Average: Select a moving average from the pulldown menu. The moving average shown
will depend upon the frequency of the Period you selected. If you select 1
Year (daily) as the Time Period and 20 as the moving average period, the
chart will contain a 20-day moving average for the security or index. If,
however, you select 3 Years (weekly) as the Time Period and 20 as the moving
average period, the chart will contain a 20-week moving average.
- Second Moving Average: Select a different moving average period than the first,
or None.
- Print this page: Create and print a page containing only this
chart.
The stock or index chart
Charts show the price (top) and volume (bottom) action of a particular security or index over a
specified time period. The volume section of each chart displays the daily, weekly or
monthly trading volume for the particular security or for the component securities in the
index.
During trading hours (weekdays, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.), intraday prices are delayed at
least 15 minutes for securities that trade on the NASDAQ Exchange and at least 20 minutes
for securities that trade on all other exchanges. Intraday prices are updated continuously
throughout the trading day. Prices for all other periods are updated once per day, after 7
p.m. EST each trading day. All prices are adjusted for stock splits.
Dollars (top left of chart displaying one stock): Prices are in Canadian dollars
if the security symbol ends in one of the following exchange codes: -T (Toronto), -M
(Montreal), -X (Canadian Venture), -D (Canadian Dealing Network). Prices
are displayed in U.S. dollars if the security symbol ends in one of these exchange codes: -N
(New York), -A (American), -Q (NASDAQ) or -Q2 (NASDAQ-OTCBB).
Percent Change: In the case of comparative charts (when two or more securities
or indexes are displayed on the same chart) the results are plotted based on the
percentage price change for the securities or indexes for the Time Period specified. All
percentage returns are calculated based on simple capital appreciation. Volume numbers
and/or moving averages are shown only for the security or index entered in the first text
box in the Chart Generator.
Volume: The volume section of the chart displays the number
of shares purchased and sold each trading day for the particular security (and of the
constituents of an index) over the calendar year.
